Accra — Aging power distribution cables at Ghana's premier and largest hospital, Korle-Bu collapsed under what is believed to be overloading of the system last Thursday, plunging about half of the hospital into darkness and halting activities in many departments for a whole day. Some of the underground cables that supply power to the hospital are believed to have been laid in 1923 when the hospital was opened.
Work at the Accident Centre, the Central OPD, the Surgical and Medical Emergency Centre, the Radiology unit, the Blood Bank among others came to a virtual halt, following the power outage. The main pharmacy could not also work because all their systems are computerized.
