Kano — Bayero University, Kano (BUK) and the University of Boras, Sweden, are to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on waste management. With this, waste generated by the university community and Kano environs will be converted into a value- added product through chemical and biological processes.
Vice Chancellor of BUK, Prof. Attahiru Jega said if the collaboration is signed, waste products will be transformed into wealth potentials and students and staff will be exchanged between the two institutions.
In a long discussion with the delegation of the Swedish University, Jega said one of the daunting challenges facing the communities was that of waste disposal, adding that the linkage programme provides a tremendous opportunity to turn the by-product into a lucrative venture.
Mr. Muhammad Taherzadeh of the University of Boras explained that what is left of the waste is burnt to produce 10mw of electricity and 40mw of district heat, This, he said is to protect the environment for coming generations and to show the world that waste disposal can be changed into waste business.
He called on BUK to build a local network with his university of Boras through which the linkage programme would be implemented.
Taherzadeh enjoined the management to start the initiative on a small scale and then collaborate with the government and private organisations for more investment in it.
