A song from Colombian pop superstar Shakira and South African band Freshly Ground will be used as the official World Cup anthem this year.
'Time for Africa' is expected to be released on the 26th April will also be performed live by the two groups on the 10th June in Soweto, at the official FIFA pre-tournament concert in Johannesburg. The groups will then team up again for another live performance before the start of the World Cup final in Johannesburg on the 11th July.
For Freshly Ground, formed in Cape Town in 2002, the development marks another milestone in their incredible rise to the top. In 2004 they were invited to participate in the opening of parliament and performed before then President Thabo Mbeki, in an event celebrating 10 years of democracy in South Africa.
The Freshly Ground band members are from diverse countries such as South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Keith Farquharson, the bands sound engineer previously worked for SW Radio Africa and is considered one of Zimbabwe's best music producers and keyboard player. He rose to fame with the legendary group Ilanga, alongside the likes of Andy Brown, Busi Ncube and the late Don Gumbo.
