Nigeria: Fika Emir Becomes Uyo Varsity Chancellor

Damaturu — University of Uyo in Akwa Ibom State has appointed Dr. Muhammadu Abali Ibn Muhammadu Idrissa as its Chancellor. Until his appointment, Muhammadu is the Emir of Fika and chairman, Yobe State Council of Chiefs. He was born in Potiskum, headquarters of the Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe State on August 14, 1956.

His educational career started at Kaduna Capital School, where he was enrolled between 1963-1969. There after, he proceeded to Barewa College, Zaria from 1970 to 1974 for his Secondary education. He was also at Lawn Downe Tutors College in London between 1975 and 1977 for his General Certificate in Education Advanced Level (GCE 'A' Level).

Between 1977 and 1980, the chancellor was at the North Staffordshire Polytechnic, England, where he bagged the Bachelors Degree in modern studies. He returned to Nigeria between 1980 and 1981 and was mobilised to serve the mandatory National Youth Service. He served in the Inspectorate Department of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Kaduna Office.

In continuation of his educational pursuit, he was at the City University London, where he bagged a Masters degree in Political and International Relations between 1982 and 1983, as his professional career started with a brief stint in the banking, where he worked at the Owena Bank, Kano as a Graduate trainee in 1984. He left banking and went into public service, where he joined the then Nigerian Security Organization (NSO), as a deputy-superintendant and worked in the Operations Directorate at the organization's National Headquarters, Lagos. He rose to the post of Senior Security/Intelligence Officer at the National Headquarters, Lagos. He also served in various departments and held many administrative and operational positions, especially in the Operations and Counter Espionage Units.

In June 1991, he voluntarily resigned from the service of the State Security Service (SSS) and set up Akif Services, a security outfit that is engaged in security consulting and supply of security equipment and other security related services.

In December 1998, he was appointed Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, with a mandate of setting up the security department and heading it, he was with the Railway Corporation until June 2007, where he voluntarily resigned and joined the services of TOTAL/ELF where he was appointed the Organization's Security Coordinator at the Abuja Office. He attended professional courses but not limited to security officers Basic Courses, Citizenship and Leadership Training (Man 'O'War) Sea School, Advanced Surveillance Course, Interrogation Officers Courses, Psychological Operations and Intermodal Management Course all of which he did between 1984-2004, was conferred with the title of Yeriman Fika in 2002 and was on February 28, 2009 turbaned as the District Head of Potiskum where after the death of his father, he was appointed and turbaned as the 13th Emir of Fika and Chairman Yobe state Council of Chiefs.
