Johannesburg — THE Judicial Service Commission heard this week that Gauteng's high courts have had a 400% increase in civil cases in the past 20 years, without a commensurate increase in the number of judges.
In his interview, acting deputy judge president Willem van der Merwe told the commission that the courts were dealing with about 100 civil matters a day, a case load that causes extensive delays and increasing numbers of reserved judgments. This figure does not take account of criminal cases and the challenges they provide to the same courts.
