Kenya: Should We Call Him English Teacher or Teacher of English?

Nairobi — I recently described those who taught me English as "my teachers of English". But a reader reminds me that "my English teachers" is shorter. Of course. So why did I choose the longer path? Because the phrase "English teacher" seems ambiguous.

It can mean a person (of any nationality) who teaches English. Or it can mean an Englishman who teaches history (or any subject). Joe Kariuki, a Kikuyu, taught (me) English (at Alliance): He was thus an English teacher.
