Mozambique: Rubies Seized and Illegal Prospectors Arrested

Maputo — The Mozambican police in the northern province of Cabo Delgado have announced the seizure of 50 kilos of rubies and the arrest of 63 illegal miners, reports Monday's issue of the Maputo daily "Noticias".

These precious stones are extracted at the region of Namanhumbir, in Montepuez district, where there have been frequent clashes between local residents and the police. According to the police, the residents are collaborating with illegal foreigners prospecting for rubies in the area.
