Nigeria: Walking the Amnesty Deal

Lagos — Almost one year after the late President Yar' Adua led the Federal Government to strike an amnesty deal with erstwhile Niger Delta militants, real implementation has not started. Unless urgent, decisive steps are taken, the relative peace enjoyed at the moment could fade - with dire consequences.

To worsen an already precarious situation, a media report that the N52 billion voted for the initial stage of the compensation programme has been misappropriated is yet to be debunked by the appropriate quarters or even explained.
