Nairobi — When President Jakaya Kikwete called a meeting of Dar es Salaam 'elders' the other day he scored a number of points with a tough speech in which he warned against a strike that the country's main trade union (TUCTA) was planning.
The strike had been called after the collapse of negotiations over pay and related issues. Among other things, the workers were demanding a minimum wage of Tsh315,000 ($226).
