Zimbabwe: Power Failure Leaves Hospitals in Darkness

Harare — A SERIOUS power failure struck the Avenues area in Harare on Tuesday night affecting several hospitals including Parirenyatwa, the country's main referral centre.

Power was restored in areas around Parirenyatwa Hospital although the other affected parts only had power after more than 16 hours. While other health institutions turned to their generators, most of the medical centres were caught unawares and had to stop critical surgeries while others transferred patients to hospitals with electricity. A nurse at the Avenues Clinic who cannot be named for professional reasons yesterday told The Herald that they had to transfer some critical patients as their generators could not power the whole hospital.
