Kampala — More troops have been deployed to strengthen the UPDF 3rd division in Karamoja to guard the Uganda-Sudan border, through which illegal guns are smuggled into Uganda.

The move is also aimed at intensifying operations to get rid of illegal ownership of guns in Karamoja. "UPDF 5th division, commanded by Col Sam Kavuma, was deployed in the districts of Kabong and Abim, while the 3rd division, commanded by Brig. Patrick Kankiriho, will operate in the eastern, central and also part of Sudan and Kenya borders," Akiiki said.

The UPDF 5th division spokesman, Capt. Deo Akiiki, last week said: "Our work is to supplement what the 3rd division has been doing.

"We shall work together with the stakeholders to stop the smuggling of guns the way we pushed out the LRA from northern Uganda." He explained that another batch of troops, commanded by Col. Julius Biryabarema, had been stationed in Kabong.

"A total of 182 guns have so far been recovered in the disarmament exercise,"Akiiki said.
