Yenagoa — Minister of Water Resources, Chief Obadiah Ando, has commended the Bayelsa State government's effort in ensuring that the people of the state have potable drinking water.
Ando, who stated this during his one day working visit to the state, to assess Federal Government and the state water projects, explained that his visit had afforded him the opportunity to know what he never knew about water projects in the state.
He said Bayelsa was one of the few states in Nigeria, working seriously to provide potable water for the people of the state.
He said, "we have visited a few sites because our visit is brief and we can't go to all the places. Here in Yenagoa, we saw that the government is trying to give water to the populace of the state capital, and in the villages, we saw the projects the state government is grappling with. "We have seen what we came for. We have learnt what we did not know before.
When we go back and with the notes taken by my officers, the lessons learnt would be put to good use. The advice given to us would be taken very seriously. We have seen the good work in the state.
"The government is very serious about the supply of water to the people. This is one of the few governments that has concentrated a lot of resources in the water sub sector and we are happy that this is happening," he said.
The Minister who noted that the visit would allow the Federal Government see areas it would collaborate with the Bayelsa State government to speed up the process, added that the Ministry would concentrate on the projects that are not white elephant projects, which can easily be resuscitated and completed.
He warned that communities to benefit from the water projects must respond positively to protect the projects because they have a stake in it.
Conducting the Minister round the water project sites in the state, a visibly excited Governor Timipre Sylva said it was a good thing that the Federal Government had renewed interest in the development of the state.
