Johannesburg — SA NEEDS trade unions - but unions also need SA. It is strike season again and media reports convey the annual dire warnings of how much the stoppages are costing us. But this year the levels of worry seem unusually high. Nor is anxiety restricted to media commentators and business economists: an organisation representing township public transport passengers appealed to strikers to return to work.
It is clear why the sense that strikes are getting out of hand may be particularly strong this year - and not only because the World Cup is around the corner.
