Kampala — A Chadian delegate to the International Criminal Court review conference taking place at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala passed away yesterday after succumbing to a heart attack.
Gaien Barka, the legal director in the Chad ministry of foreign affairs, suffered the attack on Monday after presenting his contribution on the trial of the crime of aggression.
He was first driven to a clinic in Kampala, said Cherif Mahamat, the Chad ambassador to Ethiopia, who is also the country's permanent representative to the African Union, and part of the Chad delegation.
"He had respiratory problems and we were advised that for more specialised treatment we should proceed to Mulago Hospital, where he passed away. We have asked them to keep the body in the morgue while we make contact with the ministry of foreign affairs in Chad for its evacuation," Mahamat added.
The death was communicated to the plenary yesterday by the head of the working group on the crime of aggression, Jordan's Prince Zeid Al-Hussein.
"He was contributing to a noble cause but God has called him," said one of the delegates.
