Uganda: 1.5 Points Fail to Bridge Gender Gap in Sciences

Kampala — The introduction of 1.5 points to female applicants joining public universities twenty years ago, has failed to bridge the gender gap in science disciplines. The policy was started in 1990, a year before the private scheme came into existence.

The policy has helped lift the percentage of females at Makerere University and other public universities from 25 per cent in 1989 to 46 per cent today. However, the surge in female numbers has been almost exclusive to humanities, with virtually no change in female intake in science subjects.
