Tunisia: Island of Kerkennah Will Soon Have Its Own Ecotourism Resort

Tunis — Projects and programs are currently under implementation to boost the status of Kerkennah Islands as a major tourist destination.

These projects will strengthen basic infrastructure, improve transport conditions as well as natural and cultural specificities of the region. Shuttling between the Kerkennah islands and the city of Sfax, a new ferryboat one of the major achievements in the transport sector, was recently built at a cost of 12 million dinars and with a capacity of 800 passengers and 150 vehicles. The ferry will soon come into operation.

In addition, works is underway for the modernization of road network on the Island, and the construction of an airport whose preliminary study was completed.

The Island of Kerkennah recorded during the last period, recorded significant progress in the creation of a new eco-tourist resort in Sidi Fankhel covering an area of 90 hectares , with a capacity of 3,000 beds, as part of a series of hotels, tourist accommodation, entertainment centers and parks.

The departments concerned completed the asphalting of the road that leads to the area and drilled a deep well which was connected to the desalination plant. In a related event, the municipality of Kerkennah also received funding of 1, 3 million dinars to embellish the tourism environment, mainly at the tourist resort of Sidi Frej which houses 7 hotels with a capacity of 800 beds.
