The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently banned telecom service providers from sending promotional Short Messaging Service (SMS) to who do not have prior subscription for them. The NCC ban came following complaints by subscribers that such unsolicited messages constituted nuisance to them.
Until now, the messages usually come from corporate organisations and event promoters who pay service providers in advance to advertise their programmes. However, the operators subsequently take the liberty to inundate their subscribers with the messages, sometimes pushing them through at odd hours.
