Nigeria: Women Groups Challenged On Prostitutes Rehabilitation

FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed has challenged Muslim and Christian Women Organisations to be in the forefront of the fight against prostitutes in Abuja and assist government's efforts towards the rehabilitation of women of easy virtue, who were recently evacuated from the streets of Abuja.

The Minister gave the charge at the weekend, while receiving officials of the Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN) who paid him a courtesy call in his office.

He observed that faith based women organisations have a crucial role to play in the rehabilitation of these women by remoulding their thinking and instilling high moral standards in them.

Senator Mohammed urged FOMWAN not to segregate in their selfless service to humanity in order to make Nigeria a better place for all classes of Nigerians, irrespective of religious belief.

He promised to allocate a plot of land to FOMWAN to build her Secondary School in the Federal Capital Territory, noting that FOMWAN's Nursery/Primary school in the territory had assisted in giving sound and qualitative education to children at the early stage of development of Abuja.

He directed the FCT Social Development Secretariat to assist FOMWAN in the organisation of its forthcoming National Conference, billed to hold 6th August, 2010 at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

Speaking earlier the Amirah, FCT chapter of the association, Maryam Larai Adamu intimated the minister of the forthcoming National Conference and solicited for financial support to host the conference.

According to her, the conference is aimed at tackling issues of national interest as it affects the well being of women and children thereby building bridges of trust and mutual understanding across ethnic, religious and geographic divides.

The association also requested for a utility vehicle to facilitate its outreach activities.
