Uganda: Civil Servants to Retire At 60, Kajura Insists

Kampala — The Public Service Ministry and lawmakers have rejected President Museveni's directive to reduce the retirement age from 60 to 50. Public Service Minister Henry Kajura told MPs on the Public Service Committee that the youth lack competence to run the country, adding that it will be dangerous to lower the retirement age.

The Minister was in Parliament to present the 2010/11 ministerial budget estimates. Earlier, MPs led by Anthony Yiga (Kalungu West) and Sammy Lote (Moroto) argued that even if the government reduced the retirement age, it would not guarantee youth employment. "You cannot have a country run by only the young people; you will be destroying that country," Mr Lote said. "The decision to reduce the retirement age is premature and there is no guarantee that the unemployed youth will get jobs when people are giving birth day and night."
