Sierra Leone: President Koroma Angry With SLBC

Freetown — President Ernest Bai Koroma is not happy with certain developments within the newly created Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), revealed minister of information and communication.

Alhaji Ibrahim Ben Kargbo, while addressing staff and board members during a unification ceremony of the Hotel Cabenda and New England SLBC studios yesterday, said the president was dissatisfied with the ongoing wrangling bedeviling the smooth operations of the institution but did not however elaborate.

There have been reports in the local media of an 'internal strife' within the corporation following the appointment of a new SLBC director-general, relieving then acting director-general Dr. Ivan Ajibola Thomas of his duties.

According to the information minister, President Koroma was most often furious with regards the 'infighting' that is affection the performance of the station despite his government having taken the bold initiative to transform the then state broadcaster to a public institution for the benefit of Sierra Leoneans.

Mr. Kargbo said it was the hope of the president that authorities at the SLBC will consider the high unemployment rate in the country while recruiting staff of the newly established institution, noting that President Koroma had assured the United Nations General Assembly of his government's commitment to the transformation process.

"This is an important institution for which I do not want to see any misunderstanding with regards its operations because, if our donor partners should ask about happenings within the SLBC, we must be able to give them an update," the minister quoted the president to have remarked.

He urged the SLBC board of trusties to be proactive as the corporation was new and that there were a lot of expectations from the public. "The SLBC is totally independent and it should not be partisan. You can keep your money, undertake programs but we will not leave the institution to be bankrupt. Government will provide subventions for the smooth operation of the entity," Kargbo said.
