Zimbabwe: Envoy in Harare Opposes Farm Arrests

Johannesburg — THE South African ambassador in Harare, Mlungisi Makalima, has written to Zimbabwean Home Affairs Co-minister Theresa Makoni in protest at the arrest of two farmers on charges of “illegally occupying land”.

The arrest of the two South African nationals has caused a diplomatic flurry as it is seen as a direct contravention of the Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement between the two countries, signed at the end of last year. The agreement is aimed at providing security of tenure to South African investments in Zimbabwe.
