Tunisia: Foreign Minister Receives Chairman of UN General Assembly

Tunis — Relations between the United Nations Organization (UNO) and Tunisia and the current international issues were the focus of Foreign Minister Kamel Morjane's meeting, on Tuesday in Tunis, with Dr. Ali Abdessalam Triki, President of UN General Assembly's current session.

On this occasion, the Minister reiterated Tunisia's attachment, under President Ben Ali's impetus, to the United Nations principles aimed to restore peace and security in the world, as well as its deep conviction of the important task consisting in establishing an international community that rests on justice, co-operation and solidarity.

[1]Mr. Kamel Morjane commended the laudable efforts exerted by the UN General Assembly President in facing up, with efficiency, to the world crisis and promoting multilateral action and dialogue of civilizations.

The Minister underlined Tunisia's constant support to the brotherly Palestinian people and to their just cause, reminding of Tunisia's call to resume peace talks in the Middle East region, on the basis of international reference system, of the Arab Peace Initiative and of the two-State solution.

For his part, Mr. Ali Abdessalam Triki commended the positive and constructive role played by Tunisia on the UNO level, in addressing efficiently the current international issues and for the restoration of peace, stability and development for the benefit of all world peoples.

He added that the encounter had provided the opportunity to discuss the issues of concern to the United Nations, notably the Organization's reform process.

He reminded of the creation of a unified mechanism for gender equality to boost women's position within the international community. He underlined the key role played by Tunisia in setting up of this mechanism.

Besides, Mr. Triki said that the meeting had turned on the issues inherent to the Arab world, and at the forefront of which is the Palestinian issue.
