Kigali — EGYPTIAN citizens in Rwanda were on Friday joined at their embassy by government officials and members of the diplomatic community in Kigali to celebrate the 58th Egyptian Revolution Day.

The day marks Egypt's liberation struggle from British colonial rule in1952.

Ahmed Rami, the Egyptian Ambassador to Rwanda, said Egypt's struggle for independence was confronted with several challenges before it restored the country's pride and sovereignty.

"The revolution laid a foundation for the massive developments that Egypt is now witnessing in various fields, among them are the phenomenal leaps in economical performance in the last year despite the global financial crisis," Rami said.

The Ambassador also commended the bilateral relationship shared between Rwanda and Egypt, mentioning the Egyptian Rwanda Joint Commission that was held in Cairo last year where ten partnership agreements were signed between the two countries.

"The agreements boosted the volume of trade between the two countries and an Egyptian trade exhibition was held in Kigali earlier this month to give a new push to our developing trade relations," he said.

The Minister for Education, Charles Murigande,, who was the guest of honour, told the guests that Egypt deserves recognition as an African flag bearer for being one of the oldest civilizations of the world and for the role it has played in spreading knowledge throughout the world.

He commended the ambassador's contribution to the good relations shared between the two countries, notably for enabling over 60 students from Rwanda to study in Egypt this year.
