Sierra Leone: Parliament Makes Firm Request to SLCB

Freetown — Member of the Public Account Committee in Parliament has requested the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank to produce a full list of government institutions that have closed their accounts with the bank.

Hon. Hassan Sheriff said the committee needs the list because it was revealed that some government institutions were closing their accounts from the SLCB and lodging it with some of the newly opened banks. "The full list is needed to ascertain whether or not government institutions are removing their accounts from the Commercial Bank," Hon. Sheriff demanded.

The request was made when the SLCB managing director was summoned to answer to questions that have to do with the confiscation of CEC Construction Company's equipment for failing to pay a loan taken from the bank for the construction of the Pamlap-Guinea highway

Hon. Sheriff noted that the committee would not mind if government institutions open accounts at the Rokel Commercial Bank, which is an indigenous bank, adding that they are worried over the influx of Nigerian banks "which are not reliable".

SLCB managing director, Crispin B. Deigh promised the committee that the list would be submitted to Parliament soonest.
