Arusha — Mount Suye Ecosystem being developed by the Arusha Municipality for Ecotourism since early 1980's is likely to be realized come 2015. The project is located in Kimandolu area.
Since its acquisition the area has passed through several phases of conserving it. The first phase was in the 1980 when people occupying the slopes of the Kimandolu-Suye hill were relocated. The project's second phase in the 1990s saw the slopes being declared a protected area by the government.
In its third phase starting in 2000 the council started re-afforesting the area giving it a dense vegetation cover and so far more than 5 kilometres of walking trails have been cleared and partly paved leading visitors to two strategically located view points.
At least 200 million Tshs is required for the implementation of the project and so far about 20 million has been spent on the three phases of implementation, according to the Municipal environmental officer Mr. Joseph Lumeya.
Mr. Lumeya said the aim of this project is to promote city tourism, create employment and investments in terms of hotels and tourist attractions including wild animals. The project would also be of benefit for those studying ecology and other sciences. The Municipality is facing challenges such as lack of funds and destruction of the environment by the natives who relish in cutting down of trees.
