Uganda: Kipsiro Brightest Prospect for Medal

Africa is on show. Over 43 countries are assembling at Nyayo stadium this morning for the biggest continental athletics meeting - the Africa Senior Championships.

The fact that Kenya are the first East African nation to host the event proves how far they've gone in developing the sport and it will be no surprise if they dominate. South Africa had a decent show at the last edition in Addis Ababa and are definitely a force to reckon with in the field events while Nigeria's prowess in the sprints can't be questioned.

Uganda's showing in Addis Ababa two years ago left a lot to be desired, the best performer being javelin thrower Patrick Kibwota, who finished fourth. Kibwota is part of the 28-man team bracing for action here but expecting him to go one better is unrealistic considering his recent performances.

It's safe, though, to bet on former world bronze medallist Moses Kipsiro stepping on the podium like he did four years ago in Bambous, Mauritius. Kipsiro, Uganda's current best and most consistent runner, missed the 2008 edition through injury but has set out to make a mark this year. "I badly want to win a medal in Nairobi," the 24-year-old declared in March. Kipsiro's quest will be helped by the absence of injured Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele, who has a divine right to gold over 5,000m and 10,000m at every big championship. But Bekele or no Bekele, the Ugandan has decided to go for a double and will be on track this evening for the men's 10,000m final.

His biggest challenge today comes in the form of another Ethiopian Sileshi Shihine and Kenyans Geoffrey Mutai, Wilson Kiprop and Mathew Kosorio. Before Kipsiro hits the track, Justine Bayigga, Mildred Gamba and Emilly Nanziri are opening Uganda's campaign in the women's 100 metre-heats. Of the three, the seasoned Bayigga stands a chance of progressing but is unlikely to get a medal. Ali Ngaimoko's form is good enough to get him into the final of the men's 100m and 200m.
