Nigeria: No Kits for Athlets as African Festival of Athletics Begins

Nigerian athletes competing in the opening day of the 17th African Championships in Athletics which start today inside the Nyayo National Stadium here in Nairobi,Kenya will have to use their old kits if they still keep them or appear in kits supplied by their various clubs following the non-arrival of the kits sent by Nigeria's official kitters, NIKE.

It was gathered from officials of the Athletic Federation of Nigeria present here that the federation's secretary general,Mrs Maria Worphil who was at the IAAF World Junior Championships which ended last Sunday in Moncton,Canada will bring the kits NIKE reportedly shipped to Nigeria instead of the competition venue.

Officials here have started seeking for an alternative by asking athletes who still have their old Nigeria kits to release it for the use of the athletes competing at least on the opening day of the championship which is today.

Most of the athletes wondered when this lack of planning will stop in Nigerian athletics.

'Why is it that it is only in Nigeria that we always have problems about kits, about allowances and even about team selection? When are we going to get people who plan ahead for competitions and do things the right in th federation', asked one of the athletes who pleaded anonymity for fear of being victimised.

AFN president, chief Solomon Ogba who was also in Canada for the World Junior Championships is yet to arrive here in Nairobi and many of the officials on ground here as well as the athletes are eagerly waiting for is arrival to sort out their camp allowance and other things.

'I wonder what the federation would have become if Ogba wasn't on board. He seems to be the only one working in the federation',remarked another athlete who competed for Delta state at the 2010 Mobil Championships held in Calabar, Cross River state.
