Namibia: Union Leader's Business Decision Questioned

THE Namibia Public Workers' Union (Napwu) general secretary, Peter Nevonga, has come under fire from fellow union leaders for allegedly overstepping his authority in the running of the union and its businesses.

Sources within the union claimed that Nevonga had sidestepped Napwu's national executive committee and transferred more than N$1 million from Napwu's account to the union's business wing, Effort Investment.

The money was allegedly pumped into the Napwu guesthouse in Windhoek's Suiderhof suburb.

When asked for comment, Nevonga said: "I don't know what you are talking about." He refused to comment further.

Sources within the union said it was not the first time that Nevonga had ignored the national executive committee and made unilateral administrative decisions.

This time, however, it is alleged that Napwu treasurer Taimi Nujoma refused to sign the transfer but it happened nonetheless.

Nujoma refused to comment, asking for the identity of the source who provided the information to The Namibian.

Napwu president Eliphas Ndingara yesterday said that the union would have to work out procedures, since it had never faced such a case were money had to be transferred from the Napwu account to another.
