Namibia: Ministry to Decide on Oshikuku Land Dispute

THE Ministry of Regional and Local Government is compiling a report on the findings of a recent investigation into a land dispute between the Oshikuku Village Council and the local Roman Catholic Church.

A ministry source told The Namibian that ministry officials visited Oshikuku at the end of June to hear both sides of the story.

The village council had requested the ministry to intervene in the dispute, which started in 2008.

The church claims that the council wants to develop a piece of land that was given to the Roman Catholic Mission at Oshikuku by the Uukwambi Traditional Authority in 1924.

According to the council, the land in question lies outside the churchyard.

Earlier this year, the Legal Assistance Centre (LAC) advised the church and the community to approach the High Court to have the registration of the land in the council's name set aside.
