Angola: Opposition Unita Rebuts Content of Newspaper Article

Luanda — The leadership of Angola's main opposition Unita party Wednesday in Luanda refuted the content of an article that appeared in the wednesday issue of the the State-run daily paper "Jornal de Angola", titled "The coup thesis of Unita Youth Wing", and labelled it as a way of counteracting the outcome of the congress of the party's youth wing (JURA), held recently in Luanda.

According to Unita's information secretary, Alcides Sakala, the article was the way found to distor the true purpose of the JURA congress "once democracy emerges stronger, within the party".

Asked about the alleged indictments in the article, mr Sakala said that the right of expression is safeguarded in the angolan Constitution, promulgated on February 5, stating that his party has done everything for the consolidation of democracy and strenghtening of peace achieved with many sacrifices.

The article, published in the newspaper, advocates "the creation of facts or exploitation of situations occurring in the country such as political, social, economic, cultural, sports and academic events of natural disasters to discredit by all means the image of the president of the republic and shift the focus of the conmtradictions Unita/Mpla to people against Mpla, nurturing and intensifying social and economic contradictions Mpla/Government" an allegation strongly denied by Alcides Sakala.

The spokesman of the main opposition party stated that since since the achievement of peace in 2002 Unita has been expressing willingness to contribute to peace consolidation and to the creation of mechanisms preventing the resumption of war.
