Kigali — Kigali City Council (KCC) has called upon city residents to always construct their houses in accordance with the council's requirements.

The call was made by Bruno Rangira, the KCC Public Relations and Communications Director, who led a team of city officials on a tour to inspect buildings in various sectors in Gasabo District yesterday.

"You should always first obtain relevant documents and approval before you construct your residential and commercial structures because that helps to avoid houses that are constructed in a disorderly manner," Rangira said.

He added: "Today's tour was mainly aimed at inspecting constructions in several sectors in Kigali City, especially in areas residents have been putting up houses without relevant documents," Rangira told The New Times.

The official pointed out that some residents in Gisozi, Kimisagara and Nyakabanda, among other sectors have been constructing houses illegally using mud bricks (locally known as Rukarakara), but added that KKC, in conjunction with the local authorities, have demolished several of them.

Rangira added that some residents had begun to construct houses illegally during these presidential campaigns thinking that the local authorities would ignore them.

He told The New Times that the sectors they have visited include, Nyarugunga, Kanombe, Remera, Kinyinya, Gahanga, Masaka and Gisozi.
