Nigeria: Nawis Salutes Falconets

More encomiums have continued to pour for the nation's women's U-20 team, the Falconets over their feat so far at the on-going FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Germany.

The latest is coming from the Nigeria Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS), which has congratulated the girls for qualifying for the semi final of the World Cup.

Nigeria defeated defending champions USA 4-2 on penalties to seal a place in the last four of the women championship after several misses in previous outings.

National President of NAWIS, Professor Florence Adeyanju urged the girls to keep the flag flying as they confront first timers, Colombia today.

"We have seen that the girls have been able to prove beyond every reasonable doubt that they were good and fit as a fiddle. They are riding on the good luck of the nation. However they should not relent as they face the tricky Colombians in their next game," she said.

'The victory is for Nigerians notwithstanding your sex or tribe as football is the game that brings all and sundry together," she added. Germany 2010 is the fifth appearance for Nigeria after they reached Canada 2002, Thailand 2004, Russia 2006 and Chile 2008.

Nigerians have been describing Sunday's victory over the US as a sign of good things to come for the nation's women's game which has obviously gone into oblivion.
