Namibia/Ghana: Coach's Age Comment Stirs Controversy

NAMIBIAN under-20 coach Bernard Kaanjuka has caused controversy by claiming that he suspects Ghana fielded overage players for last Sunday's African Youth Championship qualifier, according to a report on peacefmonline.com yesterday.

The report says the coach made the controversial comments following his team's 4-0 away drubbing to Ghana in the first qualifying round of their Orange African Youth Championship qualifier played in Accra, Ghana.

"The Ghanaian players are too big as compared to our players. Their number 5 is too grown and their ages I suspect (that) he's above the required age," he is quoted as saying to Ghanasoccernet.com.

But when asked to substantiate his claims, Kaanjuka was reportedly diplomatic with the issue.

"We were preparing for under-20 competition but to my surprise we came here to play the big team of Ghana. I never said they are too old or too big but I said we played the big team of Ghana."

The report says Caf is expected to send investigators to Windhoek for the return leg to ascertain the truth on August 7. Age-cheating is pervasive in African youth football and the continent's governing body is yet to clamp down on countries who cheat.
