Harare — Veteran Dynamos midfielder Desmond Maringwa has rallied the Harare giants to invoke the spirit of 2008 and turn on the style against Esperance in a Champions League clash against the Tunisians in Tunis tomorrow.
Esperance will host DeMbare in a second Group A match at the Stade de Redes tomorrow night.
It is Dynamos' second visit to Esperance for a mini-league assignment with the popular Harare side having visited the Tunisian giants in the 1999 edition of the Champions League.
But Dynamos' most memorable visit to Tunisia was in 2008 when the Glamour Boys, then under the guidance of David "Yogi" Mandigora knocked then holders Etoile Du Sahel out of the Champions League via a Benjamin Marere goal.
Dynamos had won the first leg 1-0 at Gwanzura with Maringwa heading home the winner before they completed back-to-back wins which sent the former champions reeling out in the second round.
Tomorrow, Dynamos go into battle needing to quickly put back on track their Group A campaign after suffering a surprise 2-0 reverse at home against TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Maringwa - who is also the Dynamos vice-captain - is the only survivor from the team that travelled to Esperance in 1999.
Yesterday, the seasoned midfielder, who helped breathe life into the Dynamos team in the game against TP Mazembe, called on his teammates to invoke the spirit of the 2008 side that surprised the whole continent by beating Etoile Du Sahel in their backyard.
It was the first time in 72 home matches that Etoile Du Sahel had lost.
Maringwa believes that despite getting to a false start with their defeat by Mazembe, Dynamos have the capacity to bounce back and is confident Elvis Chiweshe's men can achieve a result tomorrow night.
Like when they travelled to Etoile Du Sahel in the resort town of Sousse, Dynamos arrived in Tunis on the eve of the match and barely had a chance to adjust to the conditions in the North African country.
But they turned on a determined show that won them the hearts of many neutrals around the continent. It is that capacity to fight against the odds, which Maringwa believes could help Dynamos in Tunis tomorrow.
Dynamos flew out to Tunisia last night on a journey that took them via Johannesburg and another long stop-over in Cairo, Egypt, from where they are expected to connect to Tunis tonight. Maringwa said Dynamos should still fancy their chances despite playing away.
"The home team is always difficult to beat because they always want to take full advantage of the conditions and the support. "But football is funny, you will never know what will happen until at the end of the 90 minutes.
"There are equal chances of winning for both teams. "Football is always the same as long as you prepare well. What is important is how you play on the day. You need to get your strategies right and play according to plan," said Maringwa.
The former Warriors midfielder said DeMba-re had learnt from the mistakes that cost them the game against TP Mazembe and were awaiting a test of character against Esperance.
"We started on a very low note and sometimes it demotivates if you lose your first game especially at home. "But to me this is time for a test of character because if you want to be champions you have to pick yourselves up and start working extra hard.
"This is a challenge to Dynamos because we have never lost our first game at home in this competition. "In fact, it was a wake up call and I hope we learnt our lesson.
"If TP Mazembe could beat us at home then we have to do justice to our supporters by winning away. But it's not going to be easy. "It takes a lot of courage, hard work and determination. We all know what is at stake.
"The coaches have been trying to encourage and motivate the team since the TP Mazembe match and I think we are now mentally and physically prepared for it," said Maringwa.
After hogging the limelight for the on-off deal between Chapungu and Dynamos, Warriors striker Cuthbert Malajila was included in the final 18-man side that flew out to Tunis.
Dynamos also included midfielder Farai Vimisayi who had appeared to abandon them and return to his roots in Hwange.
Hwange secretary Burzil Dube, however, accused Dynamos of acting in bad faith claiming that they had not released the player to the Harare side. "We have not agreed on anything with Dyna-mos and we are actually worried about their big brother attitude.
"We last spoke to them on this issue three months ago when we stated our position, but Dynamos have not met any of the conditions. "I think the football authorities should intervene in this issue. We have sent our complaints to Zifa and the Premier Soccer League," said Dube.
The deal between Dynamos and the pair of Hwange and Chapungu have been on-and-off since the start of the season. The two players however, made the final 18 despite concerns by Chapungu and Hwange that Dynamos should stop using the players until they pay the outstanding loan fees.
Malajila and Vimisayi have also been training with DeMbare and were part of the Harare giants' final training session before departing for Tunisia at the National Sports Stadium B arena yesterday.
Dynamos coach Chiweshe said he was looking ahead to the match and strongly hinted that he might use Malajila and Vimisayi while Dylan Chivandire, who has recovered from injury, was also named in the travelling party.
Chiweshe, however, lamented their travel arrangements and said his side would not have enough time to train in Tunisia where they arrive tonight with the match kicking off in 24 hours.
He said they could have difficulties in adjusting to the hot weather conditions, but stressed the need to collect maximum points.
"You need to get to an unfamiliar place two or three days before the match in order to acclimatise. "Unfortunately, that could not happen but we know the task that is awaiting us in Tunisia. "The mini-league is all about collecting maximum points and we know that. So we are going to play our game and hopefully we will win," said Chiweshe.
Dynamos are bottom of the table. Mazembe lead the four-team pool with three points followed by Esperance who also picked up a full set after beating Entente Setif 1-0 in their opening match in Algeria.
In another Group A match, the Algerians will travel to Lubumbashi in the Democratic Repu-blic of Congo for a clash against Mazembe.
Dynamos squad:
