Abuja — Federal Government acceptance to host the 3rd session of the African Union (AU), Ministers of Culture Conference shows the commitment of Nigeria to the agenda and programmes of African Union.
Minister of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Mohammed, stated this when he signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOU), for the hosting of the conference, said though the responsibility is enormous for the country but hosting of the conference is very strategic for Nigeria.
According to him, "The signing of this MOU today signifies Nigeria's total commitment to hosting this conference; the signing of the agreement further shows our commitment to the responsibilities that are required of us for hosting this conference. We know that Nigeria and African Union have had robust relationship since Nigeria got its independence in 1960.
The hosting of this conference signifies Nigeria is still committed to the programmes and agenda of African Union."
He noted, "Nigeria is ready to host the conference. The Federal Government is very supportive of the African Union and is ready to host the conference for the purpose of forging unity among the African countries."
"I want to say that the responsibility that is expected of Nigeria is enormous but we believe that the nation is capable in hosting this conference because Nigeria has agreed to host this conference. It is clear that Nigeria is ready to host this conference and today shows that Nigeria is ready to host the conference." The Minister said.
Earlier, Director Social Affairs of AU, Dr. Olawale Mayeigun, who represented AU, the organization never doubted Nigeria because they know that once Nigeria decides to acts, they act responsibly. He said the conference which is slated for the last week in October coincides with the 50th Independence celebration of Nigeria.
