Uganda: Kipsiro Settles for Silver Medal

Moses Kipsiro once again called to his traditional final kick to snatch silver in the men's 10,000m at the ongoing Africa Senior Championships, here yesterday.

The Ugandan runner, champion over the race four years ago, stood firm to deny the hosts a 1-3 finish after they had led going into the dying moments of the race.

Kipsiro was so tactical in his running, keeping behind the Kenyans for the bigger part of the race.

He squeezed between two Kenyans; Wilson Kiprop and Geoffrey Mutaui in the home straight and was only denied gold by what he termed as poor decision making. "My calculations didn't work out properly," he said shortly after Kiprop (27:32.91) had taken the gold. "I was torn between breaking away so early and waiting till the last few metres. However, I am happy with the silver. It's never easy beating Kenyans at their home."

Kipsiro (27:33.37) was so elated he did a lap of honour with compatriot Stephen Kiproitich, who finished 6th in 28:33.85, much to the chagrin of the hundreds of Kenyan fans that were bracing for a clean sweep of medals in the 25-lap race.

"That was a wonderful run. He didn't succumb to the Kenyans dirty tactics and could have taken gold," Ugandan long distance coach Benjamin Longiross, noted.

Besides Kipsiro's awesome display, other Ugandan athletes fared well in the afternoon session with Waisswa Lukungu, Emmanuel Tugumisirize and Ramadhan Akulla all progressing to the men's 400m semifinals due today. Emilly Nanziri also finished third in heat 2 of the women's 400m and will run in the semis today.
