Cameroon: Inhabitants Lack Sensitisation on Usage of Road

The rehabilitated road still needs finishing touches but is already in use.

Inhabitants of Bonaberi especially at the old road who have waited patiently for the completion of the rehabilitation work on the Bonaberi old road can now have some gleams on their faces because the road is in circulation though it has not been officially inaugurated. Among the roads constructed in Douala, the planning of this road I different and though many people have commented negatively on the size of the road as being small and is just one lane, this is the first road which has allowed for parking space, a path for the motorbikes, pedestrian path and above all beautified with green lawns.

The Bonaberi old road used to be like an eye saw in Douala, because it was the main road into and out of Douala from the South and West Regions. The rehabilitation process was a sign of relief to many especially the inhabitants of that neighbourhood. The road has been cleaned up and enlarged, electricity poles have been placed on the road and there are street lights at night in that area, the seven kilometres of gutters, six kilometres of Camtel network already put in place. The Besseke area which is 700metres long and is below sea level which was the main delay and core of the road has been rehabilitated with paved blocks. The road has been marked indicating parking space from vehicle circulation track. The trees and grass planted on the lawns add beauty to the road.

Though the road is been used now, motor bike riders are not using the path made for their circulation but are also using the path made for vehicles creating the same kind of congestion which is found on the roads in Douala today. The road has been rehabilitated such that there should be no congestion and no over speeding. There is lack of sensitisation on the usage of the road. Some vehicles now use the path for motor bikes as their parking lodge. There is just confusion in the use of the road making the purpose for the road to be useless. It is expected proper sensitisation will be done before official inauguration of the road.
