The inter-regional tournament for ascension to division two enter the third and last day of play this weekend.
Candidates for ascension into MTN Elite Two will be known this weekend on the third and last day of play of the inter-regional tournament. Ten teams comprising the regional champions went into contention for the three available places in the elite two championship left by Danay, Renaissance and Esperence. The teams were divided into three groups; two with three teams and one with four teams after draws.
In Group A, Chantier Naval football club has taken a good option for qualification after recording six points in two matches. A victory or draw next Sunday against Bafut United at the Municipal stadium in Bafang will be enough to enable the club sail to the second division. However, victory for Bafut United over Chantier Naval and victory for the St Paul Warriors over Victoria United will create a stalemate in the group as there will be three teams with six points each and the difference will have to be determined by goal advantage or a play off match should the tie persist.
Dynamic Ngaoundere is calling the shots in group B with 3 points followed by Yaounde II football club and Mayo Rey with one point each. While the die is already cast for Yaounde II who, have played all their matches, Mayo Roy of Tchollire still has a chance to turn the tables and grab the lone group ticket for the Elite Two championship in case of victory against Dynamic next Sunday at the municipal stadium in Maroua. It will a duel between Racing and Santos of Koza for the Group three ticket to division two given that both clubs now have three points each. With two defeats in two outings, Espoir of Abong Bang is out of the contention with zero point in two matches.
The new format was introduced since 2006 as part of reforms aimed at professionalizing the management of football in Cameroon. It started with the streamlining of the number of clubs in the elite one championship from 18 to 14 and after experimental regional division two leagues for one year, decided to constitute one national elite two championship. The Interpool tournament which used to serve as promotion to division one was abolished as the first three teams in the elite two championship automatically ascend to the first division to occupying the positions left by the last three teams that drop to elite two. Only champions in the regional leagues qualify to play the inter-regional tournament for ascension to division two during which the first team in each of the three groups, gains admission into the national Elite Two championship.
