The Directorate of Human Resource Department at the ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, recently concluded a three-day training programme on good leadership skills for school heads and principals from public schools in the North Bank Region(NBR).
The programme was held at the regional education directorate in Kerewan. The purpose of the training is to empower the heads and principals to acquire requisite skills with the objectives of enhancing leadership qualities and promoting educational attainment. The training is to provide the opportunity for teachers to look at critical issues, community coaching, instrumental leadership, leadership in schools, motivation for better teaching results, effective teacher location, teacher performance appraisal, teaching students, evaluation and the role of principals.
Speaking at the occasion, Musa Suso, the regional education director underscored the importance the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education attaches to capacity development of head teachers in promoting good and sound leadership styles in schools. He noted that as heads of schools, it is prudent upon all to ensure that the attainment of quality education for all is achieved and this can only be achievable if appropriate and good leadership styles are applied and enhanced.
He reiterated the need for teachers, school management committees and communities at large to promote and value the culture of building sound relationship that help in the overall attainment of promoting cordial relationship to address some of the common issues being encountered at the school level.Suso thanked the Human Resource Department at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education for their continuous support in staff development.
On his part, Alieu A Saine, course facilitator from the Human Resource Directorate of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education said that the leadership training is important as it will build the capacity of head teachers with relevant skills and knowledge. The programme, according to him, is to promote professional growth, develop coaching relationships, apply principles of adult learning and implement action research to inform instructional decision making.
Modoulamin Bojang, senior education officer at the Regional Education Directorate Region 3, said that the programme will help heads of schools to improve in school governance and empower them to adopt new innovation to improve teaching methods, enhance student relation and promote school base monitoring towards quality education.
