The Country Director of Management Science for Health Strengthening Pharmaceutical System (MSH/SPS), Mr. David Sumo has expressed serious concern over the manner in which drugs trading is flourishing in the Country, and has accus ed drug enforcement agencies of not applying any efforts to crack-down on the ugly practice.

Mr. Sumo said it was time for law enforcement agencies including the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to begin taking drastic actions against those he described as 'untrained and self- imposed drugs peddlers' who he claimed, are roaming market places ,street corners, and communities.

"This drugs business is expanding too much and we need to urgently attached seriousness to it or else it would finish all of our people especially innocent kids" he said angrily.

The MSH/SPS boss made his contention known when he awarded certificates to over 200 dispensers from different pharmacies and drug stores who participated in a week-long intensive and interactive training that were held simultaneously at the headquarters of the Liberian Family Planning Association and the YMCA Building, Broad Street, Monrovia.

According to him, the separate trainings were meant to build the capacity of health workers particularly those who are dispensing drugs in the Country.

"I challenge you the participants to not just acquire this knowledge and sit down on it, but you have to practicalize these skills so that you can help in saving life" he cautioned.

At the same time, Mr. Sumo maintained that the authority needed to concentrate more on taking a holistic approach in curbing what he termed as "dangerous and life threatening trade."

Also, the MSH/SPS country director revealed that the training was phase one of his organization's social responsibilities to empowering the capacity of health workers nationwide and making particular reference to drug dispensers.

"Drug dispensing is beginning to be one of the main killers of people in Liberia. Therefore, we have to pull all of our resources to ensure that this campaign achieves its expected results" he pleaded.

The week-long workshop was funded by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, USAID, Global Funds, the World Health Organization (WHO) and other Health related institutions.
