Nairobi — A multi-universities study shows a 66 per cent reduced risk of HIV infection among circumcised men compared to uncircumcised ones.
The study, by researchers from the Universities of Nairobi, Illinois and Manitoba (UNIM) was presented after four-and-a-half years of follow-up at the International Aids Conference in Vienna, Austria.
Chances of infection
According to the Male Circumcision Consortium newsletter, the researchers followed about 1,500 men who took part in a randomised controlled trial -- a scientific experiment commonly used in testing the effectiveness of healthcare services -- of male circumcision conducted in Kisumu.
That trial, and similar ones in South Africa and Uganda, showed that circumcision reduced chances of infection from a female partner by about 60 per cent.
"In the follow-up study, we found that this protective effect is clearly sustained, and possibly even strengthened, over time," said principal investigator Robert Bailey of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
The three randomised trials were stopped early after 18 to 24 months when it became clear that circumcision offered significant protection against HIV infection, but left open the question whether that protective effect is sustained over time.
Prof Bailey and his colleagues conducted the follow-up study to find out whether male circumcision offered long-term protection in 54 months.

Isn't that sweet to know!!! We do know that it's wise to be cautious when taking steps but if proving by African Scientists that Circumcision is vital to curtail HIV/AIDS, we "Africa and Africans" MUST follow. Furthermore, where are those who were saying circumcission was bad for this situation?? Where are they now, and what would they say about the outcomes?? Some people just want to see Africa keep going backward so that they can have something to keep humuliate and laugh at. What a dark hearts of those who always think Africans and Africa can't do anything progressively. I don't blame them, we blame our puppet african leaders who are blind to the games of these evil everdadomes.

We're still here, and circumcision is still the wrong way to tackle AIDS in Africa. There are still six African countries where men are *more* likely to be HIV+ if they've been circumcised: Cameroon, Ghana, Lesotho, Malawi, Rwanda, and Swaziland. Eg in Malawi, the HIV rate is 13.2% among circumcised men, but only 9.5% among intact men. In Rwanda, the HIV rate is 3.5% among circumcised men, but only 2.1% among intact men. If circumcision really worked against AIDS, this just wouldn't happen. We now have people calling circumcision a "vaccine" or "invisible condom", and viewing circumcision as an alternative to condoms. The South African National Communication Survey on HIV/AIDS, 2009 found that 15% of adults across age groups "believe that circumcised men do not need to use condoms".
The one randomized controlled trial into male-to-female transmission showed a 54% higher rate in the group where the men had been circumcised btw. No-one knows if the real increase is 0% or 54% or 108%, but we do know that condoms are far more important in preventing HIV transmission, than cutting parts off people's genitals.
ABC (Abstinence, Being faithful, and especially Condoms) is the way forward. Promoting genital surgery will cost African lives, not save them.

Well, if condom is so much successive in curtailing HIV/AIDS why then others in this advance countries won't prove it. Just as usual they lie so that they can manipulate others for their own gain; what a life to live by. Africa must, should follow and abide by her cultures, traditions, norms, customes and believes. Therefore, circumcission was one of the believes Africans have in them, and so, it was fulfill. Furthermore, Africa need to follow and adhere to what their scietists are saying and in this case as it's going to be in many cases, they were right. No more should Africa take whatever comes from our enemies since their motive is to keep Africa under their so call controlling behaviour. Our Unique African cultures, traditions, norms, customes, believes and societies SHOULD NEVER be allow to be polluted by evil invaderdomes whose intentions are to devide, conquer, humiliate, degrade and belittle Africans and Africa..
