As politicians and church and civil society leaders appeal for peace ahead of Wednesday's referendum in Kenya, some Rift Valley communities hit by the 2007-2008 post-election violence have fled to their ancestral homes, fearing a fresh flare-up.

Kenya's last presidential polls, in December 2007, led to disputes and violence that left nearly 1,500 people dead, and about half a million displaced.
