Angola: President Dos Santos Analyses Situation in Guinea Bissau

Luanda — The Angolan head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, analysed Thursday in Luanda the prevailing situation in Guinea Bissau with the chairperson of the Executive Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), James Victor Gbeho, and with the executive secretary of the Portuguese-speaking Countries Community (CPLP), Simões Pereira.

After the meeting at the Presidential Palace, in Luanda, attended by the State secretary for Foreign Affairs, George Chicoty, both leaders were unanimous in acknowledging the "contribution that the Angolan Statesman may give for the resolution of the situation in the West African country.

José Eduardo dos Santos is the acting chairperson of CPLP, an organisation that groups Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Sao Tome e Principe, East Timor and Portugal.

However, a communiqué released Thursday in Luanda, by the Foreign Affairs Ministry, states that during the meetings held between James Gbeho and Simões Pereira, it was decided that the Ecowas and CPLP should coordinate actions towards the creation of necessary conditions for the implementation of the reforms in the defence and security sectors of Guinea Bissau.

By the way, the source pointed out that "they will hold a joint visit to the Portuguese-speaking nation to hold contacts with the military and political authorities of the country.

It was also asked the participation of the members of the Restrict Committee of CPLP Armed Forces at the meeting of the Chiefs of General Staff of Ecowas countries, to be held on August 11-12, in Bissau.

The press release adds that there should be a joint work to restore the trust specially within the International Community, in the peace, security and economic development process in the West African country.
