Luanda — The president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), James Gbeho, today considered the reform of the defense and security sector as one of the assumptions for restoration of peace in Guinea-Guissau.
He said to have discussed the issue during a meeting with angolan president, Jose Eduardo dos Santos, witnessed by the executive secretary of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), Simoes Pereira.
According to James Ghebo, the angolan head of state rejoiced with the moves forward made by the political and military officials of Guinea-Bissau with the support of representatives of the international community.
The president was also pleased with the guidances on how to get more progress towards peace in Guinea-Bissau asseverating that the initiative will be extensive to other african leaders for the immediate resolution of the situation in Guinea-Bissau.
For the CPLP executive secretary, Simoes Pereira, the intervention of of the angolan head of state in the situation in Guinea-Bissau opens "a new chapter in the format of what has been the situation" in the west african country, hoping that cooperation between CPLP and ECOWAS will contribute for a lasting solution for the almost cyclic crisis prevailing in Guinea-Bissau.
The angolan State Secretary for External Retalions, George Chicoty, who also attended the meeting said that President Eduardo dos Santos is already implementing his peace plan of action for Guinea-Bissau, in his capacity of president of the CPLP, recalling that he visited Nigeria recently for contacts with president Good Luck Jonathan, the current ECOWAS chairman, as special envoy of the angolan head of state.
"Common strategies between ECOWAS and CPLP will carry on for restoration of peace in Guinea-Bissau" mr Chicoty asserted stating that the visit of the ECOWAS president confirms the entry into force of a joint work plan.
