Gambia: Sillaba Samateh's Sister Remanded

Jankeh Samateh, a sister and surety to Sillaba Samateh (now at large) was on Tuesday brought before Magistrate Hillary Abeke of the Banjul Magistrates Court. The accused was charged with aiding prisoner to escape under lawful custody.

According to the particulars of the offence, the accused Jankeh Samateh, sometime in the year 2010 at Banjul within the jurisdiction of the honourable court, aided Sillaba Samateh to escape while under detention at the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) headquarters. The accused pleaded not guilty. However the counsel for the accused, M.S Camara said a ruling is pending at the High Court. He then made an application for the accused to be granted bail, adding that the accused has been under detention for 51 days.

In responds to the defence counsel's application, the deputy director of Public Prosecution (DDPP) Mikailu Abdullahi opposed the bail application. In his ruling, the presiding magistrate ordered for the accused to be remanded in custody pending the determination of the case. The case was adjourned to Wednesday 18th August, 2010.
