Swimming on part of South Africa's east coast was banned for a fourth week on Wednesday, due to the risk of attacks by sharks attracted by record numbers of sardines in waters near Durban. While the sardine run is an annual phenomenon, observers say this year's run is unprecedented in both scale and duration.
"This is very unusual," said Mike-Reade Anderson, operations head of the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board, as he announced the extension of the bathing ban.
