Nigeria: Zoning is Unconstitutional, Says Mudiaga-Odje

Warri based lawyer, Dr. Akpo Mudiaga Odje, has said that zoning arrangement of the People's Democratic Party, PDP, is unconstitutional, null and void, same being in conflict with sections 17(2)(a) 42 and 131 of the 1999 constitution. Dr. Odje argued that the only qualifications required to contest for the office of the President are clearly set out under section 131 of the constitution.

He sad for the avoidance of doubt the section 131 provides that: "A person shall be qualified for election to the office of President if - (a) He is a citizen of Nigeria by birth; has attained the age of forty years; is a member of a political party and is sponsored by that political party; and has been educated up to at least School Certificate level or its equivalent."
