Nigeria: Sambo,17 African Leaders Grace Congo's 50th Independence

In Brazzaville — Nigeria's Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo is leading a high powered federal government delegation to Congo's capital,Brazzaville to join in the historic celebration of the country's 50th Independence anniversary celebrations. The country got its independence on August 15th 1960.

Sambo, arrived Brazziville yesterday at 4:00 pm to meet other African Heads of states and governments and those of other foreign countries who are also in town to show solidarity with the Congolese leader, President Dennis Sassou Nguesso who is serving his second term after ruling for 22 years,12 as dictator and 7 as elected leader.

He was received at the Maya Maya International Airport by top government officials of the Congolese administration. The VP is representing President Goodluck Jonathan who is on his way to Gabon for another continental engagement.

It would be recalled that 17 African countries emancipated themselves from colonial rule in 1960 to obtain their independence. Every 15th August, the Congo Brazzaville celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of its independence just as Nigeria does her own on each 1st October.

Sambo is expected back to the country today after the celebrations.
