Congo-Brazzaville: National Day

press release

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of the Republic of Congo on the 50th anniversary of your National Day this August 15.

We remain committed to working with the Congolese Government as it seeks to strengthen democracy, governance, and the rule of law. Accountable governance and strong institutions are essential to sustainable development and securing a bright future for the Congolese people.

We commend the effort that Congo is making to strengthen its economy, especially its infrastructure and the agricultural sector, and to improve the quality of education and health care for its people. Congo's recent debt relief through the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries Initiative was an important step forward for economic and governance reforms.

I wish all Congolese a safe and joyous National Day celebration and reaffirm the enduring friendship between our countries. May this year mark the beginning of a new era of peace and prosperity in the Republic of Congo.
