Sierra Leone: Rotary to Train Local Youth

Freetown — The Rotary Peace Camp says it will soon embark on the training youth leaders, government representatives and traditional leaders in post-conflict Sierra Leone.

The three-day training which runs from August 22 to 25 this year, will take place at Jendemah in the eastern province of Sierra Leone.

According to a news release from the organization, the training will focus on strengthening the capacities of youth leaders to engender human rights, peace building and non violent conflict resolution in post conflict and fragile states in West Africa. Participants will also be trained in peace and conflict resolution and a special cross-border training workshop would be held for immigration and law enforcement officers and traditional leaders.

Richelieu Allison, who is spearheading the upcoming Peace Camp and also the brain behind the Peace Hut and Caravan, said there was still the need to ensure that people continue to reconcile their differences. Allison established the West African Youth Network to mobilize young people in restoring peace and human rights.

Rotary International president, Ray Klinginsmith noted that 641 rotary center alumni, including 65 Africans, were already making difference in grassroots efforts and key decision-making positions in governance around the world.

"It is this growing network of peace fellow Richelieu Allison, who has returned to his homeland and is applying directly what he learned, that makes me believe that peace is possible and Africa will have a peaceful and prosperous future," he said.

He noted that the aim of the caravan was to promote peace, unity and reconciliation in the war affected countries in West Africa and to increase involvement of local people in the building process.

The Rotary Center for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution was launched in 2002 to help the next generation of government officials, diplomats and humanitarian leaders develop the skills needed to reduce the threat of war and violence worldwide.
